Stuart Wins Prestigious National Teaching Award for Classics

Stuart Falconer, our Chair and Classical Civilisation Lecturer at Truro and Penwith College, has been awarded a national Classical Association Teaching Award for Promoting the Study of the Ancient World, sponsored by Cambridge University Press. These awards recognise exceptional dedication to classics teaching across the UK, and are among the most prestigious honours in the field.

As the sole Classical Civilisation teacher at the largest provider in Cornwall, Stuart has worked tirelessly to make the ancient world accessible, relevant, and engaging for students across the region. His teaching brings ancient history and culture vividly to life, sparking genuine curiosity and confidence in learners. He also ensures that every student feels able to ask questions, engage critically, and develop a deep understanding of the subject.

"Stuart has encouraged me to take my knowledge of the ancient world to higher education and really deepened my understanding," said one student.

"He's really passionate about the classics which makes the lessons very engaging. He really believes in his students" another student added.

Beyond the classroom, Stuart’s contributions are equally inspiring. He organises student competitions, hosts lectures from leading academics, and founded the Cornwall Branch of the Classical Association, providing a valuable platform for students and the wider community to connect with the ancient world.

"He’s created a welcoming, inclusive environment where everyone feels encouraged to ask questions and pursue Classics further," said another student.

This national recognition is a testament to Stuart’s vision, energy, and passion for classical education. We're very proud to celebrate this outstanding achievement with him.
